The Frozen River — Zanskar

One of the world's most remote valleys, accessible by the legendary Chadar Trek across a frozen river in January and February.

🧊

Zanskar — India's Most Remote Valley

Accessible only via a narrow gorge road or — in winter — by walking across the frozen Zanskar River (the famous Chadar Trek), this isolated valley was completely cut off from the outside world for half the year until recently. Its monasteries, including the dramatic Phugtal Gompa built into a cliff face, and the traditional villages of Padum and Zangla are among the most extraordinary sights in all of the Himalayas. The Chadar Trek in January-February — walking on a frozen river through icy gorges — is widely considered one of the most unique treks in the world. We offer fully guided Chadar Trek and Zanskar summer road trip packages.

Zanskar Valley — The Remote Kingdom

Rugged, remote, and deeply spiritual — Zanskar is a valley of ancient monasteries, dramatic gorges, and traditional Ladakhi villages that feel frozen in time. Summer road trips and winter Chadar Treks both available.

Chadar Trek — Walking on a Frozen River

Every January and February, the Zanskar River freezes solid to form "the Chadar" — a sheet of ice through dramatic gorges. Walking it for 8–10 days is one of the world's most unique and challenging treks.

Phugtal Gompa — The Honeycomb Monastery

Built directly into a natural cave in a sheer cliff face above the Tsarap River — Phugtal is perhaps India's most dramatically situated monastery, accessible only on foot. A trek to Phugtal is utterly unforgettable.

Travel Planning

Best Time to Visit Ladakh

Ladakh is a year-round destination — each season offers a completely different experience of this extraordinary landscape.

☀️

Peak Season

Jun – Aug

Roads fully open, all lakes accessible, maximum activities. Best for Pangong, Nubra, Tso Moriri and Zanskar by road. Highest footfall but wonderful weather.

🍂

Shoulder Season

May & Sep

Fewer crowds, pleasant temperatures, most destinations accessible. May: flowers blooming; September: autumn colours begin. Excellent photography conditions.

❄️

Chadar Trek Season

Jan – Feb

The frozen Zanskar River makes the Chadar Trek possible. Extreme cold (–20°C or below) but an absolutely once-in-a-lifetime experience for the adventurous.

🎪

Festival Season

Jun – Jul

Hemis Festival (July), Ladakh Festival (September), and Sindhu Darshan (June) fill the calendar. Traditional masked dances and Ladakhi culture at its most vibrant.

Why Ladakh

Why Ladakh Belongs on Every Traveller's List

Otherworldly Lakes

Pangong's colour-changing blues, Tso Moriri's solitude, Tso Kar's wildlife — Ladakh's lakes are unlike anything else on Earth.

Epic Bike Trips
